The Problem

Abattoir ponds have aerobic and anaerobic solid fats, oils, greases, and protein fragments because they do not have a natural variety of lipase producing microbes. The solids build-up, leading to rotting effluent and deterioration of the biomass. This results in non-conforming effluent discharge, aerobic & anaerobic sludge build-up, and offensive smells. In short, a huge mess!

purpose of the trials

The purpose of the trial was to show that, by adding Avantu’s scientifically selected bacteria, the biodegradation process can be accelerated. By speeding up the breakdown of fats, oils, greases, and protein bits, this benefits the existing oxidation ponds.

Methodology

80 litres of effluent from one of the oxidation ponds was poured into a tank and a bucket of solid effluent from the side of the same pond was also put into the tank. The rate of the liquefaction of the solid FOG was the prime concern and what if any solids remained after 6-weeks. It was agreed that effluent analysis would be done to gauge a pattern during the trial and measure any fluctuation in the chosen analytical items analysed.
